The Burnet High School girls basketball team beat Pflugerville Connally 59-19 Dec. 19 before breaking for the holiday.

“I thought we came out and got off to a good start,” head coach Rick Gates said. “After the first quarter we were up 14-10. The rest of the game they only scored nine points.”

The Cougars didn’t score in the second period and scored five in the third quarter and four in the final stanza.

“Our entire team got to play a lot of minutes,” Gates said. “We saw some good things from our players. We executed well on offense and defense.”

Top of the list were seniors Christina Graves and Abi Aguillon. Graves scored 10 points, while Aguillon showed her long-range accuracy.

“Christina played well,” Gates said. “Abi came off the bench and hit three 3-pointers. We’ve been seeing her shoot the ball better in practices. We’ve been ready for her to show that kind of range in her game.”

Gates noted the reserves’ strengths make the Lady Dawgs difficult for opponents because everyone is ready to contribute when she enters the game.

“Obviously, the starters start for a reason,” he said. “We do feel like we can get production and solid contributions from our players off the bench. I think they feel confident. They’ll come in and make positive contributions.”

Gates enjoyed seeing the team’s intensity stay at a high level, no matter who was on the floor representing Burnet.

“We feel like if we play solid defense for the whole game, even if things aren’t coming to us offensively, defensively we can stay in the game,” the coach said. “We make sure we’re playing solid defense on every possession. And we were scoring double digits in every quarter.”

Both the Burnet boys and girls basketball teams will play at the Leander Glenn tournament Wednesday and Thursday, Dec. 28-29. In pool play, the Lady Dawgs face Leander High at 11:30 a.m. and Leander Vandegrift at 6:30 p.m., both on Wednesday and Pflugerville Weiss at 12:30 p.m. Thursday. Their fourth game will be played later on Thursday based on their pool record.
